Important Whispering Hills Subdivision Information

Fire Department: The many new residents in our community and those that have been here awhile, as well, might be interested to know that the number of home sites supported by the SBVFD numbers approximately 8,000. Of those 8,000, only about 1,600 are active members of the SBVFD. What does it take to become a member? $25.00 per year. This $25.00 might be the cheapest insurance that you’ll hope you’ll never have to fall back on. Did you know that when the SBVFD responds to a fire at a residence they are allowed to bill the home owner to recoup some of the costs related to material and labor associated with that call? If you are an active member, you will not be billed. The actual amount billed is dependent of the extent and severity of the response. Everyone is sent a request to become a member of the SBVFD on an annual basis. You can donate more if you desire. In fact, if you itemize your taxes, with the $25.00, you can deduct $24.00 (minus the $1.00 to make it legal with the tax code -- at least that is what I am told…contact your tax expert…that’s my disclaimer).

The cost to outfit a single firefighter, whether paid or volunteer, is tremendous, amounting to many thousands of dollars each. Equipment needs to be maintained, repaired or replaced. More buildings, commercial and residential alike, are being built every day and more equipment is needed. There is still discussion about building another firehouse (site not yet determined) that will require additional funding. The additional tax levy that was approved by voters, early last year, provided the SBVFD with some additional funding but more is needed, especially since the FD was lacking in funding in the past. They are still playing catch-up and many holes need to be filled. Please do your part and happily pay for the membership.

On a related note, home owners are urged to contact the fire department for reflective address number signs that are meant to set at your driveway entrance. They can be purchased directly from the SBVFD for $20.00. I have been told that they will install them for you. The SBVFD also requests that, if a home owner puts in a driveway and gate that each is wide enough to allow for the emergency vehicle to get through…a minimum of 10 feet wide is desired.

Road Safety: Again, we have to remind everyone that the speed limit is 30 MPH. You will notice that the county has placed reflective markers on some of the roads, thanks to the coordination efforts of a previous board member, Tracy Knouse. She has worked with the county engineer to get more of them put down at the earliest possible date. We are also requesting that they place more speed limit signs in the subdivision. The markers provide drivers with better situational awareness and, hopefully, keep everyone on the right side of the road, especially as they come over the crest of the hill. It can be “interesting,” meeting a speeder come over the hill, pointed right at you.

Some have remarked that perhaps the speed limit should be 20 instead of 30 MPH. While that idea may have merit, it is understood that 30 MPH is adequate if everyone obeys the posted limit. Don’t be surprised to see more law enforcement in our subdivision in the coming weeks.
